Yeah! I get to fly the 747-8i on it’s maiden route

Lufthansa just announced it’s first route for the brand new super-jumbo – the Boeing 747-8i. The will be flying the Frankfurt – Washington Dulles (FRA – IAD) route. The flight #s are LH418 and LH419.

As luck may have it, just a few weeks before the announcement I had booked myself on LH419! That too in Business class!! My flight is in August. As Lufthansa will get their first 747-8i in a month or so, I am almost 100% certain that I will be flying the jet. The new 747-8i will also feature Lufthansa brand new fully flat business class seats (as opposed to the current slightly inclined wedgie-maker seats). Can’t wait. I am holding a seat fora group of airplanes at an airport myself in row 2, right in the nose cone section. Lufthansa has it’s first class seats in the upper deck, putting some business class seats right in the nose-cone. Of course, the website is still showing the old 747-400 plane. I plan to keep checking regularly for the plane swap to happen and confirm that I will actually get to fly the new one. I will surely blog about my experience once the flight is done.

Lufthansa is rumored to have it’s second route for the 747-8i be to India. I tweeted asking then which city. They did not respond…

  1. On the 748 the upper deck will have business class and F will be in the nose. What you mentioned is true for the 744. You should just keep an eye when the seatmap changes as your row 2 business class seat will probably get reassigned.

If you check out the press photos you’ll see the new C seats on the upper deck. Enjoy the seats!

I need to get from Europe to Boston and back this summer, maybe I’ll take a detour through IAD on the way back to Europe to check out the new C.

  2. @Andre, thanks for the info. I will need to look into the new business seats more. I actually love the idea of C being n the upper deck. I have personally never flown in the upper deck. Looking forward to it!

  3. If your plane’s gonna be that 747-8i, then I am afraid your seat will be changed. Reason for that being that on this type the first class is in the head section while the upper deck contains additional business class seats.

  4. Oh, that was redundant. Sorry for that. Hint: Go for the main deck C. U/D ain’t worth climbing the steps.

  5. Is there an exit row on the upper deck business class? Any preferred business class seats (either upper or lower deck)?

  6. I do not believe there is a designated ‘exit row’ with extra space in the upper deck of a 747
