Star Alliance grabs another Chinese carrier: Shenzhen Airlines

a plane at an airportShenzhen Airlines, a primarily domestic Chinese Airline is set to join Star Alliance. The announcement came today morning on Star Alliance’s Facebook page. They expect Shenzhen to fully join the alliance by late 2012.

Recently, there has been a race between airlines to expand partners in China. China Eastern and Southern were taken up by Skyteam; OneWorld is actively looking for partners. And now, this announcement by Star Alliance. I have never flown Shenzhen but they don’t seem to have a good reputation as a carrier. While, I don’t trust Skytrax ratings much, Shenzhen has a Skytrax rating of only two.

Should there be minimum quality requirements for joining the prestigious alliance. Of course my perception is based on internet reviews. So, if any of you have experience flying Shenzhen, let me know.

  1. Hainan Airlines is currently in discussions with OneWorld & may be announcing something relatively soon. I was speaking with the airline’s head of North America last month who said that it was likely they would be a member by 2012.

  2. Correction: They’re actually a 3-star carrier.

I’ve flown them before. It’s your usual domestic Chinese airline. Nothing notable, although they do serve food on almost all flights.

  3. esperemos que oneworld coja a hainan o la coje star y ella parece muy buena y 5 estrellas ahunque no se .pero si american airlines y iag hacen codigo tendrian la entrada en china que les falta.

  4. @ David, thanks for the correction, @Max, I have heard that rumor too. Hope it comes true.
