Is Priority Club Pointsbreak coming to an end?

Priority Club Pointsbreak is arguably one of the best hotel award promotions. One can redeem reward nights at various Priority Club (PC) properties throughout the world for just 5000 PC points (United Airlines Express.jpg worth ~$30).

The Pointsbreak list is normally updated every 2 months or so and is valid for the next 2 months. The last time the list was updated, was on Feb 28, 2011. However the new list is has been published today and it is valid only till May 15!

Incidentally, PC announced significant changes to their program last month. As ‘The Nomad’, the most important change for me was the introduction of last minute rewards at 50% of the usual points cost. This feature is supposed to debut on May 6, 2011, one week before the current Pointsbreak list expires. Is this last minute reward feature set to replace Pointsbreak promotion?

The last minute reward feature can be good overall if a lot more properties participate in it. What would be your reaction if the last minute reward feature replaced the Pointsbreak promotion?

  1. I would pretty much stop earning PC points. Their Elite Program is truly horrible, with almost no upgrades or perks for even their top-tier Platinum members.

  2. IMHO a last minute deal will be much better for those of us who plan family trips using hotel points. I have been Platinum Ambassador for the last 3 years, and have found it difficult to match Point Breaks to convenient locations that I genuinely want to go to. I have even considered out of the way trips just to take advantage of IC hotels offering Point Breaks!

I think that all in all, I would rather be able to say to my family “We’re off to NYC/BOS for the weekend” knowing that one or more hotels will have last minute availability that I will get at a discount. However, having experienced rather inconsistent adoption of other Brand policies across the ICH span of hotels, I would be sceptical that all hotels will adopt this potential discount option.

  3. @Pz Fus I too feel this weekend option will be good for last minute planners. But the absence of any discount option the whole week long is a bummer!
