Frontier, US Airways and Lufthansa – Cards with additional miles for Balance Transfers

a large white airplane on a runwayI found three new credit cards that not only have a sign-up bonus, but also offer extra miles for transferring you balance. This is a unique opportunity to earn miles for transferring balances to potentially lowers interest rate APRs and earn some miles along the way! Not too many cards offer miles for balance transfers.

I will be the first to point out that none of these are great deals. I am personally not getting any of these cards as I do not have any balance to transfer. Without the transfers, these deals are not really worth it. But, if you do have a balance you can transfer to one of these cards, then the deals become much better. (Please read the balance transfer fine print carefully before you execute any transfers to ensure you get the most miles and the APR etc are right for you). I would also like to point out that none of these three cards have their annual fees waived. All three cards are from Barclaycard. I had posted earlier posted about another card they offer – the Virgin America Credit Card here.

Here are the details:

1. Frontier Airlines:

** OFFER GONE** The Frontier Airlines World MasterCard® offers – 25,000 miles after the first purchase. 10,000 additional miles after spending $750 in the first 90 days. An additional 10,000 miles after initial balance transfers in the first 90 days. For a total of 45,000 miles. The net miles, if you do all of the three mile earning activities are good. Especially given Frontiers excellent redemption rates. I would not recommend this just for the 35,000 miles one can earn with the balance transfer.

Other features of this card are – Double miles on Frontier purchase. Low APR on the balance transfers. $59 annual fee (not waived in the first year either).

** OFFER GONE **

2. US Airways:

** Note: I have updated this card with a link referred to me by a reader. The new link has 40,000 miles and no annual fee as the initial offer and the extra miles for balance transfers**

The US Airways Premier World MasterCard® offers – 40,000 miles after the first purchase. Additional 10,000 miles after the initial balance transfer within the first 90 days. Redeem for 5,000 miles less (so starting at 20,000 miles). 2 Miles of every $1 spent on US Airways purchases.

Other features – Two companion tickets per year, with redemptions starting at $99. First class check-in. One US Airways Club day pass every year (note this is a one-use pass, not really a full day, multi-use pass). $89 annual fee (waived for the first year).

3. Lufthansa:

I am not sure of this card is new or not. I remember searching for a Lufthansa card a few years ago, but could not find one that was offered in the US. I am sure I just missed it, but here it is. The Lufthansa Premier Miles & More World MasterCard® offers – 20,000 miles after the first purchase. An additional 15,000 miles after the initial balance transfer (within the first 30 days). 2 miles per $1 spent on purchases from Miles and More integrated airline partners (many airlines here, including Swiss and Austrian). $79 annual fee – not waived the for year, but waived totally for Senator and HON Circle members.

Just like the previous two cards, this is only attractive with the balance transfer offer. The no annual fee for Elite members makes that part attractive if you are a Miles and More Senator or HON circle member.

The final word:

Apply for these cards if there is an option for you to transfer a balance. Otherwise wait for a better offer.

  1. Lufthansa card has been around for a while, had mine going on my 3rd year in the US and had the same bonus.

  2. There is a better non-affiliate offer for US Airways card from Barclay that waives the the $89 first year annual fee that comes with an advertised 60K miles offer. This is all over other blogs and on FT, I am surprised you would promote a lower offer. The better deal is:

But it really is just 40K miles upon first use plus another 10K miles after 1 year anniversary. I would not recommend people doing balance transfer to earn miles since even at 0% interest, they charge you a 4% balance transfer fee, that’s $400 in transfer fee if you transfer $10,000 to earn the 10K extra miles

This card can also be churned easily with no first year annual fee.

Also for the Lufthansa card, Barclay time to time runs special offers upto 50K bonus miles. I would wait for that promotion instead.

  3. There is a 40K US offer with annual fee waived in the first year, 10K on renewal, and 10K balance transfer bonus:

But why do I suspect you already knew there was a better (non-affiliate) offer given your blog posts tend to be nothing more than affiliate advertisements masquerading as blog posts. At least you are now adding affiliate disclaimers, but it’s really a shame these advertisements bump higher than legitimate blog posts from “non featured” bloggers on Boarding Area.

  4. Why not posting 40k link for US Airways? Wouldn’t that be better for your readers? Sort of back handed tactics here on this blot, sad.

    Best,

  5. @HikerT, @PedroNY, I have updated the post with the link with the higher miles. I had not seen that link before.

  6. I can’t believe you are recommending to get miles through balance transfers. Balance transfers have a fee of 3%, so you are basically paying 3 cents per mile, a terrible deal!
